December is the holiday season for many religions, and it’s a time of giving and joy. It is also a time to be extra vigilant regarding safety, both in your home and out and about.
The following are some important tips to keep yourself and your loved ones safe during the holidays.
Tree safety
- Keep your Christmas tree at least three feet away from all heat sources (fireplaces, radiators and heat vents) and do not block doorways.
- Only use indoor lights indoors and outdoor lights outside. Replace lights that have been broken or have cracked sockets, check for frayed or bare wires or loose connections, and always turn them off when going to bed and when leaving your home. It is also very important to choose the right ladder when hanging lights.
- For real trees, always ask the vendor to cut two inches off the trunk to expose fresh wood for better water absorption. Ensure that water in the tree stand never runs dry, as the drier the tree, the more easily it can ignite.
- If using an artificial tree, make sure it is labeled “fire or flame resistant.”
- Choose decorations that are flame-retardant, non-combustible and non-conductive.
Fire safety
If you use candles, make sure the stands are on sturdy, nonflammable surfaces such as glass, marble or metal and away from flammable materials like curtains, tablecloths, books and shades.
They should be out of reach of children or pets who could accidentally knock them over.
Consider decorations with electric candles. For example, you can purchase electric menorahs and kinaras.
The other fire hazard is the kitchen. The holidays account for a significant portion of home fires every year. Never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended and have a fire extinguisher handy.
ATMs
If you need to use an ATM, particularly at the holidays when crime rates are high, choose one inside a mall or other well-lit location.
Don’t withdraw large sums of money; instead use credit and debit cards whenever you can. You should also shield the ATM keypad from any observer standing nearby. Don’t linger at the ATM machine after making your withdrawal.
Shopping
Avoid shopping alone or at night. If you must shop at night, park in well-lit areas and ask a mall security officer to escort you to your car.
You should also park as close as you can to your destination and never leave valuables on the seat or floor of your car, where they are visible. Be aware of your surroundings and keep packages, purses and wallets secure.
At home
Even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes, lock all doors and windows before leaving your home. Also, it is not wise to have large displays of holiday gifts that are visible from outside the home.
Criminals will sometimes take advantage of holiday generosity by soliciting donations for non-existent charities, while others will also pose as deliverymen.
Finally, never open the door to strangers. If you don’t know who’s knocking, it is best not to open the door at all, especially if you are home by yourself.
A final word
With extra caution and some common sense during the holiday season, you can protect your home, your valuables and most importantly, the ones you love.
